Gets away being inferior being “famous,” controlling contract for personal life, tries not to let you leave like Hotel California

AWAL won’t let you use their logo or share anything more than “distributed by AWAL,” but they want you to join the “exclusive” distribution system when you’re getting traction and PR you earned yourself so they can do nothing and coast along. They make simple mistakes that no other distributor my friends or I have tried then blame you for them, acting irritated that you need them fixed. A submission marked as explicit when it wasn’t, an example of many. Filing info wrong then insulting you how you are unprofessional for wanting it corrected. Their December 2025 amended contract included how you can essentially be fired from distribution for hearsay, personal life matters, what you wear, do, or say off duty, selfies, personal life selfies, and very vague descriptions. In other words, someone can make up stories about you, and you’ll be fired without recordings or proof according to a legal pro who I described this contract to. You’re a legal adult, but you’re treated like a child TV star who can’t share personal selfies in dating with a fellow consenting adult. All without the bonus of TV network/celeb stardom and money. AWAL only cares about the same tiny handful of artists. Everyone else is a worker bee supplying money for AWAL from your 15% to spend on the teacher’s pets, who come from reality TV, TV contests, acting (Netflix!), or social. TikTok “sensations” get replaced by them fast, so don’t think you are special. You mean nothing to them. Don’t expect a career pep talk. In my experiences, 95% of the correspondence was either rude or impersonal. At one point, AWAL wanted to scold me on the phone like a child in trouble at elementary school because when their staff wasn’t fixing a problem, I copied some leadership on correspondence for full transparency. Don’t buy into their pro women, LGBTQ, diversity marketing. Actions speak louder than words. When I declined for writing only, their team ghosted me for 6+ weeks. As of this week, I cannot get a single answer from their team moving to another distributor unless I copy the new people on the AWAL support ticket. My new distributor gave me the OK to do this to get things done. AWAL always pretends there is a “technical error” or some excuse as to why nothing got removed off Spotify at my request to move catalogues and Content ID. They insist they never got my prior support tickets raised from another e-mail or the website. Uh yeah, because you ignored them or blocked me on that e-mail? Unprofessionalism you don’t get from CDBaby or anywhere else my friends have used. If AWAL “helps” you, that’s a big if because you probably will stay at the bottom of the pyramid, you go from 30% up to a full 50%. If you’re earning $500,000+ from streams, you can hire a music video director and camera crew, publicist, and more freelance or full time team members for less than half of your income that AWAL wants, and without total control of your personal life. I’m uncertain how much creative involvement AWAL wants at that point, guessing a lot for their investment and not the coasting along in silence you get at the 15% stuck level entry. You can check in, but you can never leave Hotel AWAL. They hang onto every last drop of royalty making errors (on purpose in my view) so you have to beg them to leave every week. When you’re an artist with them, you will only hear from them when they want to insult you, be cold, or be snippy. Without playlisting services, advice, marketing tips, or anything, not human kindness, not professionalism, not “here’s $15 to buy synths for a dance EP,” do you gain value from them? Not really. Things get messier when you deal with cover songs. They wash their hands clean of responsibility and want you to handle it all then blow up angry that you contacted the legal team and record label for the artists you covered trying to resolve a problem AWAL themselves created. Pick one, AWAL. Either you let artists handle it all and don’t be mean when we do, or you handle it for us like RouteNote did fixing your mistakes on my EP, because you lumped other artists alongside my name on it. And as far as that label taking down other correctly filed releases that RouteNote fixed, you wouldn’t stand up for me to say “these are false takedowns, we filed them correctly.” I got more useful career guidance out of brief chats with RouteNote in a week than I had in five years with AWAL. AWAL pays you on time and gives you stats. That is all I can say about them. They get away with being inferior because they want you to think that they’re better with the Sony Music hype. But nothing will come from it. With their wacky contract that’s on par with real hardcore religious contracts in the USA, why stay? Maybe I want to date, live, be a human, make music, get treated like a person. So should you. Don’t get near this cruel company.

They abruptly terminated my account…

They abruptly terminated my account after nearly 20 years as a loyal customer due to one track being flagged for AI. Now all my tracks are going to disappear offline. Brutal.

Awal is the worst distributor platform…

Awal is the worst distributor platform to ever exist. Once they approve your application you’ll definitely feel privileged. However, they will not help in any shape of form to support your career as an artist. The worst part of it is that they can delete your entire catalog without any notice or explanation. They expect you to become number one by yourself and if you can’t be the number one selling artist they will kick you out all of a sudden. In order to transfer your catalog you need all the information like ISRC code, track information etc, they will just send you An excel sheet and kick you out. Absolutely hate this platform. You are better off paying for distribution instead of such terrible service. Also sidenote, for payment you must create a separate Payoneer account with their own link. Despite having our own payoneer account they will not allow you to connect existing Payoneer accounts.
