I have NEVER written a review like this about any company, but what happened to me with TAP Air Portugal was so appalling that I genuinely feel obligated to warn other passengers. I am a young passenger with a disability and medical needs. I travel with a service dog, and I was traveling with family members who assist me with my care. I did everything a responsible passenger is supposed to do: I planned ahead, communicated my needs, and PAID EXTRA for an extra-legroom seat specifically so my service dog would have sufficient space and so I could remain near my family in case I experienced a medical emergency. TAP changed that seat WITHOUT EVEN INFORMING ME. I discovered it myself at check-in. They had moved me away from my family and toward the back of the aircraft. I immediately called TAP because I assumed this had to be something customer service could explain or correct. I was wrong. NO ONE WOULD HELP ME. Representative after representative could not tell me WHY TAP had changed a seat I had specifically selected and paid extra for. They wouldn’t restore it. They couldn’t offer me an appropriate alternative near my family. I repeatedly asked to speak with a supervisor or manager—someone who could actually investigate what happened. They would not transfer me. Instead, TAP’s phone representatives told me that they couldn’t help and that the employees at the airport would. So I went to the airport expecting someone there to finally help. They didn’t. I went from employee to employee. Approximately FIVE different people at the airport alone. I explained over and over: I have a disability. I have medical needs. I am traveling with a service dog. I PAID EXTRA for this seat. I specifically selected it for the additional space and to remain near the family members who assist me. If I experienced a medical emergency during the flight, being separated from them mattered. And after explaining all of that? I was essentially told: “It is what it is.” I still cannot believe those words were used to address this situation. No meaningful attempt to resolve it. No explanation. No manager taking responsibility. No supervisor stepping in. At one point, I was even told that paying to select a seat doesn’t guarantee that seat. Then WHAT exactly are passengers paying extra for? We actually called TAP AGAIN while physically standing in the airport because their telephone representatives had told us that airport staff would help. I explained to the representative that I HAD ALREADY DONE EXACTLY THAT and that the airport employees were refusing or unable to resolve anything. I felt like the person on the phone wasn’t even listening to me. Between telephone customer service and airport personnel, I spoke to approximately TEN PEOPLE. Think about that. TEN PEOPLE. Not ONE could tell me why my paid seat had been changed. Not ONE could meaningfully resolve it. Not ONE could connect me with someone who could. Not ONE person seemed willing to take ownership of what was happening. I wasn’t asking for a free upgrade. I wasn’t asking for special treatment. I was asking for help with the seat I HAD ALREADY PAID EXTRA FOR because I had selected it around my disability, my service dog, and proximity to the family members who assist me. I am not a confrontational person. I remained calm and kept trying to explain the situation because I genuinely believed that eventually I would find ONE employee willing to listen and help. Instead, after being passed around, dismissed, and repeatedly getting nowhere, I became so overwhelmed that I started crying and experienced a panic attack in the airport. An airline turned what should have been a simple customer-service issue into that level of distress because apparently nobody within the company could—or would—take responsibility for helping. And somehow, the seat situation wasn’t even the end of it. I traveled TO Portugal with an accessibility aid on TAP. It was accepted without charge and without any problem. On the return journey from Portugal to the United States, suddenly TAP demanded that I check the same accessibility aid and PAY $175. I explained what had happened on the outbound journey. Again, nobody seemed interested in listening or understanding why I was questioning the completely different treatment. And then I overheard one employee telling another employee to: “Make sure they pay.” I will never forget that interaction. It didn’t feel like anyone was trying to help a passenger with a disability understand a policy. It felt hostile and humiliating. And unfortunately, the dismissive attitude continued ONBOARD THE AIRCRAFT. TAP Air Portugal has permanently lost my business.

Delayed flight but lightning speed reimbursement. TAP delayed my flight by more than 4 hours, which in these times can happen. But communication was great, and when I asked for compensation through their system I received a first response within the hour, and after submitting requested documentation the standard reimbursement was in my account within 5 days. That is what I call excellent customer service, as disruptions can happen and are not always the fault of the airline.
