I sent my phone to Ontrack for data recovery, and they eventually returned it to me, claiming they were unable to recover any data and that the drive was deemed completely "unrecoverable". That is disappointing enough, but their customer service and transparency made the experience much worse. When I asked for a report detailing exactly what they had attempted so I could explore other options, they refused to provide it, claiming they couldn't go into detail about their "proprietary tools and processes". Even worse, when I explicitly asked if they knew of any other specialists who might be able to help resolve the motherboard or CPU issues, they were completely unhelpful. Instead of pointing me in the right direction, they simply told me that there was "no fix for this issue at this time" and that there was no way to bypass it. They wrote off my data completely and offered zero assistance in helping me look at other options. Thankfully, I ignored their advice and sent my phone to Nico at Data Forensics Ltd in Belfast. Despite Ontrack telling me it was impossible, Nico managed to bypass the deep board damage and successfully extracted 100% of my data. If you have a complex recovery case and Ontrack tells you your data is gone forever, do not give up. I highly advise anyone in the same situation to reach out to Nico at Data Forensics in Belfast instead!

I trusted Geek Squad/Ontrack with my Seagate Passport drive that held over 3,000 irreplaceable photos and videos of my family. They had my device for months — from April until July — and the only update I received was a single word: “unrepairable.” No explanation, no diagnostic details, no communication, and no breakdown of what was actually attempted. Getting my drive back with no answers was devastating. These memories mean everything to me. Out of desperation, I went in person to CBL Data Recovery in Ontario. The owner took the time to explain the real mechanical damage and what should have been done from the start. CBL was transparent, showed me the process, and immediately offered more effort and clarity than I ever received from Ontrack. Unfortunately, because Ontrack already handled the drive, the cost for CBL to attempt recovery is now significantly higher and non‑refundable — and there is still no guarantee anything can be recovered. This entire experience has been extremely stressful and heartbreaking. I wish I had known to go directly to a proper clean‑room data recovery lab instead of relying on Geek Squad/Ontrack. The lack of communication and effort has made an already painful situation even worse. I’m sharing this so others understand how important it is to choose the right recovery service from the beginning, especially when your memories are on the line.

My package was marked as delivered
My package was marked as delivered, but it was delivered to the wrong building. The proof-of-delivery photo provided by the driver did not even show my actual package — it only showed unrelated boxes and packages. I opened a case with OnTrac, but the investigation was closed without properly addressing the driver’s mistake. Thankfully, an honest resident who received my package forwarded it to me through USPS, otherwise I would have never received it. Very disappointing delivery experience and poor investigation process.

Ontrack could not recover my data…
Ontrack could not recover my data unfortunately, but paid for the postage to send my iPhone to facility and delivered my iPhone home once they deemed it was non recoverable. I spoke with representatives throughout and did not pay anything for this service.
