A Broken Spokesperson
I have bought Spoke and Solace items regularly over the last five years, spending hundreds of pounds. Sadly, a string of bicycle crashes means I do not ride anymore, but that mattered little as they do a line of plain T-shirts. I came to expect the same quality materials, fit, and service. I bought five plain T-shirts and saved them for best, trying to wear out my old cycling ones first. I wore the wine-coloured shirt for the first time yesterday and put it in the wash. It ran badly, became completely misshapen, and developed light patches across the entire garment, rendering it unwearable. When I emailed customer service, they replied: "We have never had this happen before and I cannot understand how the cotton in our t-shirts would do this in the wash. I am afraid we would not be able to replace this for you, as it is not an obvious fault with the t-shirt." They added, "We understand this will be disappointing." Draw your own conclusions from that. This company makes a great deal of its ethical sourcing, manufacturing, and packaging. It is a shame that their customer care philosophy fails to reflect that ethical ethos. Furthermore, their branding leans heavily on the individuality and handmade nature of the garments-which inherently implies individual variability and, in this instance, a defective shirt. Irrespective of past high quality justifying a premium price tag, do not get sucked in by the shallow marketing rhetoric. It is not so much the faulty shirt itself that has upset me. It is the profound sense of betrayal. After five years of consistent support, my customer loyalty and trust are completely broken. I will not be buying from them again.
