I had a very concerning experience with TheKoinClub.com regarding my personal data. I made a subscription-based purchase at a time when creating an account was not required. However, the company retained my personal information in its systems. When I later exercised my right to request the deletion of my personal data, I exchanged multiple emails with their team but was told that they would not process the request unless I provided a copy of my identification document and proof of address. I understand that companies may need to verify someone’s identity before processing a GDPR request. However, in my situation, I found this requirement excessive and unreasonable. I had already been communicating with them through the same email address connected with my purchase, and I had never opened a formal account requiring extensive identity verification. I was particularly uncomfortable with being asked to send highly sensitive documents, such as identification and proof of address, by email to a website that I do not have sufficient reason to trust with even more personal information. Providing these documents would potentially give the company significantly more sensitive data than they originally held about me. I am not claiming that identity verification is never necessary, but I believe companies should use reasonable and proportionate methods and consider less intrusive ways of verifying a person’s identity. Overall, I found the way my GDPR deletion request was handled disappointing and concerning. Instead of feeling reassured that my personal data would be handled securely and responsibly, I was left feeling that I would have to provide even more sensitive personal information simply to request the deletion of the information they already hold.
