I have a Vello Bike from 2023 with the steel frame and the 172.8 Wh Gen 2 Zehus motor. I still enjoy riding it, but there are quite a few things that make it less practical than I had hoped. The handlebar quick-release clamp, which is supposed to keep the handlebar at the correct height, simply doesn’t hold properly. I’ve tried everything, but I can’t physically tighten it any further by hand. When the bike is folded, the handlebars also tend to hang sideways and can get caught in the spokes. The battery life is another major issue. My normal commute is only 6 km each way, so 12 km in total, and that uses around 50% of the battery. The regenerative braking through the rear hub seems rather pointless in practice. I use it for braking, but it only seems to recover around 2 Wh per commute. At around 18 kg, the bike is also surprisingly heavy when you have to carry it up stairs. The bike is quite maintenance-intensive as well — it feels like there is always something that needs tightening or adjusting. On the positive side, I really like the frame, especially because there is enough space for a frame bag. I removed the luggage rack again, though, because with heavier Ortlieb panniers it became distorted and started rubbing against the tyre. Despite all these issues, I actually like riding the bike. It’s just a shame that there are so many small practical problems. I’m hoping the battery will last for quite a while longer, because I imagine replacing it won’t be cheap. Add-on to my review Just to clarify the response from VELLO regarding the handlebar quick-release: tightening it with an Allen key is not really the issue I am having. The problem is that I cannot find a position where the clamp is tight enough to prevent the handlebar from slowly slipping down during riding, while still being practical to open and close regularly. Since this is a folding bike, I need to fold and unfold it quite often, and I end up having to reposition and readjust the handlebar every time. It should stay securely in position during riding without having to overtighten or completely readjust it after every folding cycle. This is what makes the whole folding mechanism feel rather flimsy to me. The bike rides quite well, but when folding and unfolding it, the whole thing feels a bit wobbly and “rattly”. With several of these small issues, I often feel that I have to find my own workaround rather than the components simply working as expected. The folding mechanism also feels somewhat cheap compared with what I would expect at this price point. I don’t own a Brompton, so I can’t make a direct comparison, but from what I have seen, the Brompton folding mechanism appears to be considerably more refined. Regarding the battery: I bought the bike with only around 170 km on the odometer. Although the bike is from 2023, it had only been ridden about 175 km by July this year, so it has seen very little use. Getting only around 24 km from a full charge therefore seems rather disappointing to me. My impression is that the 172.8 Wh battery is simply quite small, and the advertised range feels rather optimistic in real-world use. There is another issue I didn’t mention in my original review: rust. Since this is the steel-frame version, the frame develops rust spots, and after washing the bike I often find rust stains in various places. I understand that steel can rust, but it is still something worth considering when choosing this version of the bike. So overall: I genuinely enjoy riding the VELLO, and I like the compact design and frame. But for me, there are quite a few details where the bike feels less polished than I would expect. The concept is great, but some of the components and the folding mechanism give me the impression that compromises were made to keep costs down.
