Expensive Stay, Minimal Service

We chose this apartment in Barcelona (Gran Fira) because of its excellent location. It is close to the metro, has an easy connection to the airport, and is within walking distance of the Sonar Festival. The price was high (over €600 for two nights for two people), but we understood why. Prices naturally increase during major events, and a prime location comes at a premium. Before our arrival, we had to complete the online check-in via WhatsApp, upload our identity cards, and pay a €350 security deposit. We then received instructions on how to enter the building and were asked to install an app. We were also asked to provide an arrival time. According to Booking.com, check-in was available between 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM. We requested 3:00 PM, but that was not possible. We eventually agreed on 3:30 PM. We arrived well before the agreed time and informed them via WhatsApp, as requested. However, nobody showed up. The instructions said we had to press "#90" on the intercom, but the intercom did not even have a "#" button. At around 3:45 PM, we finally called them ourselves. That was when we discovered that nobody was actually coming to meet us. They still had to send us a link for the app, and during the phone call we were finally given the correct code to enter the building. Without making that call ourselves, we simply would not have been able to access the apartment. What we found strange was that you are required to pay a security deposit in advance, yet there is no opportunity to document the condition of the apartment upon arrival. In our case, the roller shutter and the television were already damaged. Since we wanted to watch Belgium's World Cup match, we immediately reported the broken TV and, at their request, sent a photo. After that, we never received any further response or solution. That really summarizes the entire stay: a complete lack of communication. You enter the apartment, but nothing is explained. There is no information about the Wi-Fi, the air conditioning, the swimming pool, or even the key left on the table. A simple information folder or even a single sheet with the basic information, as you find in most hotels and apartments, would have avoided a lot of unnecessary frustration. In the end, we had to figure everything out ourselves. The Wi-Fi password is printed on the bottom of the router. The key is for the door leading to the swimming pool. The air conditioning works only moderately and is controlled by motion sensors, making it difficult to keep the apartment cool during the night. The swimming pool on the 17th floor of buildings 26–28 was also disappointing. The water contains a lot of chlorine, there are loose tiles around the pool, and there are no sunbeds or even chairs to sit on comfortably. Of course, as adults, we can figure things out ourselves and we do not let small issues ruin our holiday. However, when you pay more than €600 for a two-night stay, you expect the basics to be in order and at least a minimum level of service and communication. The biggest disappointment came after our stay. According to the terms and conditions, the security deposit should have been refunded within 14 days. We eventually received it only after five weeks, and only after repeatedly contacting Homenfun ourselves. That communication was also extremely difficult. During one of the calls, the representative spoke only Spanish. For a company renting accommodation to international guests, I find that highly unprofessional. We were also later told that we were responsible for the damaged television. We found this accusation unfair, especially since we had reported the damage immediately upon arrival. This is exactly why the absence of a check-in inspection or condition report is such a problem. As a guest, you have no way of proving which damages were already there before your stay, but neither does the property manager. If you require a €350 security deposit, documenting the condition of the apartment before check-in should be standard practice. It protects both parties and avoids unnecessary disputes afterwards. The location of this apartment is undoubtedly its strongest point. Unfortunately, for us, that was completely overshadowed by the poor communication, the problems during check-in, the defects in the apartment, and the way the security deposit was handled. For us, this was the first and also the last time we will ever book with Homenfun. Next time, we would rather pay a similar price for a hotel, where good service, clear communication, and professional customer care are actually included in the experience.

Our apartment was very dirty and…

Our apartment was very dirty and rundown. Our bathroom was covered in mold, the fans didn't work, light fixtures and furniture was broken down... And to top it off the hosts were completely unhelpful with all this. Do yourself a favor, and don't book here. 😕
