This company along with PeruRail are both scams against tourists that the Peru government permit. The price for a 1 hour 40 min ride is extortionate (hundreds of dollars), while Peruvian citizens can travel for just 4 dollars on another train. The best alternative to travel to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu base town) for foreigners is: Bus/shared van from Cusco → Hidroelectrica (very cheap) Takes about 6–7 hours, then Walk from Hidroelectrica → Aguas Calientes Flat walk beside the train tracks. Around 2–3 hours depending on pace.

Avoid Inca Rail – Misleading Advertising and Terrible Customer Experience I strongly advise international travelers NOT to book with Inca Rail. We booked tickets through the official Inca Rail website after finding a Google advertisement clearly promoting the code “INCA50” with “50% off.” There was absolutely NO visible warning in the ad that this promotion was supposedly restricted to Peruvian citizens only. Even worse: the Inca Rail booking system accepted the code, processed our payment, and issued official tickets without any restriction, warning, or validation check. Then, on the morning of our trip to Machu Picchu, we were stopped at the counter and told our tickets were “not valid” unless we immediately paid an additional surcharge. At that point we were under pressure, had limited time, and no realistic alternative. This felt incredibly misleading and unprofessional. If a promotion is restricted to Peruvians only, then: - do NOT advertise it publicly on Google without clear disclosure, - do NOT allow foreign customers to complete the purchase, - and do NOT wait until travelers arrive at the station to demand more money. What makes this even worse is that customer service later admitted they need to improve their validation system — meaning they are aware their process is flawed — but still refused to refund the additional charges we were forced to pay because of THEIR system failure. The entire experience left a very bad impression and completely ruined the start of our Machu Picchu trip. Their marketing promises a magical experience, but what we experienced was stress, confusion, and feeling trapped into paying more money at the last minute. There are other train operators to Machu Picchu. Based on our experience, I would strongly recommend booking with a company that has transparent pricing and treats international travelers fairly.

English Speaker Made Wrong Purchase on Spanish Website
As an English speaker, I made a mistake on the Spanish Inca Rail Website on January 11, 2026 and accidentally purchased train tickets for the wrong date of January 12, 2026. I meant to purchase tickets for March 12, 2026. There was no way that I could use the January tickets. It was clearly an error. I immediately purchased tickets for March 12, 2026, which is when I intended to travel. I was informed today that I could not get a refund for the accidental January tickets because I did not cancel them within 24 hours. I purchased those wrong tickets with less than 24 hours to correct the error. I was told that the terms and conditions did not allow for a refund under that timeframe. So Inca Rail has taken my $156 USD for tickets I could not possibly use. I only hope that they have the decency to donate that money to charity.

They took our money but did not issue us tickets. With lots of hassle we got 90% back but they charges us 10% for their faulty service.:-(.

Broke down and shouted at for using the toilet
This was a part of our Mega Expeditions tour. The train broke down at Chilca for over an hour, so we missed our chance to enjoy the beautiful sights of the journey (which was the whole point), as it was pitch black by the time we got going again. Passengers were offered a bag of nuts and half a cup of water as compensation. On the way back, the train stopped for another half an hour, for us all to watch an awkward dance you couldn't see much of in the train aisle. I needed the toilet as I got off the train, but the female staff member literally pounded on the door until I got out, where she proceeded to scream in my face. I understand there's a quick turn around, but her behaviour was disgusting. Do not recommend. Take Peru Rail instead if you have an option to do so.
