Te dan largas y no aparece nadie.

My experience with this company is, to say the least, quite remarkable. On the website, everything appears to be perfectly organized. International students are said to be professionally guided, with promises of personal support and a worry-free experience. It sounds fantastic. Until something actually goes wrong. Then it suddenly becomes clear that “mediation” mainly means that the landlord’s message is simply forwarded. My underage son rented a room in a shared apartment. An apartment where several students were already living before he arrived, and where people also moved out during his stay. No problem, you would think. Except that apparently no one ever thought of carrying out a final inspection when those tenants left. Then the day of departure arrives. You look around and see an apartment full of leftover mess. Because you were raised to be decent, you decide not only to leave your own room tidy, but also to clean up the mess left by others. In the end, six full garbage bags are taken to the container. After that, you take photos of the rooms and the common areas and send them via WhatsApp to both the landlord and Roommates. You think: good, everything properly documented. The landlady comes to collect the key, looks into the room, gives a thumbs-up, and leaves. That universal symbol, I always thought, means everything is in order. Apparently, in Seville it has a different meaning. Three days later, while you are already back home, you receive photos of three broken drawers of a freezer you have never used. The conclusion is as simple as it is remarkable: you are the last tenant, so you have to pay €55. The logic is astonishing. There was no final inspection when previous residents left. It cannot be determined when the damage occurred. It cannot be determined who caused the damage. But someone has to pay. And because you just happened to be the last one to close the door behind you, you are apparently the most suitable candidate. That is roughly the same as holding the last visitor of a museum responsible for all damage that occurred over the past month, simply because they were the last one to walk out. You then try to discuss this. You share photos, WhatsApp messages, and explain that you never used the freezer. You expect a mediation agency to actually mediate. On the contrary. You are mainly told what Roommates is not responsible for. Not for the final inspection. Not for the decision. Not for withholding the deposit. Not for communication with the landlord. Not for the damage. Over time, I seriously began to wonder what Roommates actually is responsible for. Perhaps the most striking conclusion was that we supposedly did not understand their explanation. That is a rather unusual way to end a substantive discussion. We understood their position perfectly well. We simply fundamentally disagreed with it. That is something entirely different. In the end, it was never about €55. If that had been the goal, we would never have invested so much time in polite and respectful correspondence. It was about something much more fundamental. As a parent, you expect a mediation organization to demonstrate its value precisely when a conflict arises. In our experience, the opposite happened. The “mediation” was limited to passing on the landlord’s position, after which every critical question was answered with the statement that Roommates was merely an intermediary. Perhaps that is legally sufficient. For future international students and their parents, however, it is at least as important to understand what that actually means in practice when a real dispute arises. Our experience is based on emails, WhatsApp conversations, and photos that we have kept throughout the entire process. Everyone is free to draw their own conclusions. Ours, in any case, is clear.

I rented a room in a shared apartment in Seville through Roommates when I was 17 years old. I chose to use an intermediary because I believed it would provide support and reassurance if any problems arose during my stay. Unfortunately, that is not what I experienced. Before leaving the apartment, I cleaned my own room and also removed a large amount of rubbish that had been left behind by previous tenants. I filled several garbage bags and shared photographs via WhatsApp with the landlady, Roommates and the Dutch intermediary to show that I had done my best to leave the apartment in a clean condition. I repeatedly asked for a proper final inspection before leaving, but this never took place. When I handed the keys to the landlady, she briefly looked at my room, gave me a thumbs-up and left. Nothing was mentioned about any damage. Several days later, after I had already returned to the Netherlands, I received photographs of damaged freezer drawers and was informed that €55 would be deducted from my security deposit. What I found most frustrating was that Roommates later confirmed that it could not be established when the damage had occurred or who had caused it. Despite this, the deduction remained in place. I still struggle to understand why I was expected to contribute financially to damage that nobody could prove I had caused. The return of my security deposit was also delayed for more than a month. Eventually, I accepted the €55 deduction because I simply wanted the rest of my own money back. That should not be interpreted as an admission of responsibility. It was the only realistic way to recover the remainder of my deposit. Throughout the process, Roommates repeatedly explained that they were "only an intermediary." However, from my perspective, there was very little actual mediation. I felt that the landlord's position was simply passed on to me, while my own evidence, questions and concerns received little meaningful consideration. As an international student, and only 17 years old at the time, I expected an intermediary to provide impartial support and guidance when a dispute arose. Instead, I felt that I was left to deal with the situation on my own. An intermediary proves its value when there is a disagreement between a tenant and a landlord. In my experience, that was exactly the moment when Roommates failed to provide the balanced support I expected from a company specialising in international student accommodation. I understand that an intermediary cannot make decisions on behalf of a landlord. However, I do expect transparency, fair communication and an objective approach when dealing with disputes. Unfortunately, that is not what I experienced. This review is based entirely on my own experience and is supported by WhatsApp conversations, photographs and email correspondence that I have kept. I hope my experience helps other international students make an informed decision before choosing Roommates Sevilla.
