THE “WORST OF ITALY”

THE “WORST OF ITALY” — NOT THE “BEST OF ITALY” I want to start by saying that I AM STILL CURRENTLY ON THIS TOUR, so this review is based on what my wife and I are experiencing in real time. Unfortunately, instead of the experience improving, it feels like every other day we encounter another disappointment. I also want to make something very clear: this review is NOT a criticism of our Tour Director. He has been knowledgeable, informative, professional, and helpful. My dissatisfaction is with the company’s overall organization, itinerary design, time management, hotel and meal selections, and the way this tour has been structured. My wife and I are both very unhappy with the experience. The biggest issue throughout this trip has been TIME MANAGEMENT. There is simply too much traveling, waiting, changing hotels, meeting at designated locations, and sitting on buses or boats, with far too little meaningful free time to actually experience Italy. In many places, the maximum real free time has been approximately 2–3 hours. By the time you find your way around, eat something, use the restroom, shop, or simply sit down for a coffee, it is almost time to meet the group again. It feels like we are constantly looking at the clock instead of enjoying our vacation. Now we are in Venice, and unfortunately the Murano and Burano excursion has become another example of our disappointment. From our personal experience, this excursion simply does not make sense for the amount of time it consumes. There has been far too much waiting around with very little meaningful activity. It feels as though you are paying extra for an excursion and then paying inflated prices again for food and drinks, while losing valuable time that could have been spent actually enjoying Venice. For us, the amount of waiting compared with the actual experience is simply not worth it. This is exactly the problem we have had throughout the tour: TOO MUCH WAITING AND TRAVELING FOR TOO LITTLE ACTUAL EXPERIENCE. We did not travel all the way to Italy to spend our vacation waiting for buses, boats, meeting times, hotel check-ins, hotel check-outs, and the next departure. We wanted enough free time to walk through the cities, discover restaurants, sit at cafés, shop, enjoy the atmosphere, and experience Italy at our own pace. The constant hotel changes make this even more frustrating. You arrive, check in, unpack, prepare for the next morning, pack again, check out, put your luggage on another bus, and move to the next destination. You may technically visit many places, but you do not necessarily get enough time to actually EXPERIENCE them. The Sorrento–Assisi–Venice portion was another perfect example. An enormous amount of valuable vacation time was spent traveling. The hotel room in Sorrento was also extremely basic, and the food quality was poor compared with what we expected from a tour at this price level. I also would not personally recommend this particular tour to younger or middle-aged travelers who want flexibility, energy, nightlife, restaurants, and significant free time. Most people in our group are considerably older. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but travelers should understand the style, pace, and demographics of this tour before spending their money. Another concern is that many people on our bus have been coughing or appear to be sick. Spending hour after hour together in an enclosed bus naturally makes us concerned about becoming sick ourselves during our vacation. Again, I am NOT blaming our Tour Director. He has been knowledgeable and informative, and many of these issues are clearly beyond his control. My criticism is directed toward the COMPANY and the way this entire tour has been designed and managed. Italy itself is beautiful. Venice is beautiful. Sorrento is beautiful. The problem is not Italy. The problem is that the itinerary does not give us enough QUALITY TIME to enjoy Italy. My wife and I did not come here just to take a picture, say “we visited,” and move on to the next city. We came here to EXPERIENCE Italy. Instead, we feel that too much of our vacation has been spent packing luggage, changing hotels, sitting on buses and boats, waiting around, and watching the clock. And the most disappointing part is that WE ARE STILL ON THE TOUR. I sincerely hope the remaining days improve, but based on our experience so far, each new part of the itinerary seems to bring another disappointment. This is our personal experience, and unfortunately BOTH my wife and I feel the same way. For us, this has definitely not been the “Best of Italy.” So far, it has felt much more like the “WORST OF ITALY.”

Just did the colours of Sicily tour

Just did the colours of Sicily tour. All optional and included meals and wine were terrible and the optionals well overpriced and often in cheap and difficult locations with the exception of an optional seafood dinner that was excellent. Many hotels in remote locations, away from the ability to walk to places in the evening. Our travel director and bus driver were very good but I would avoid this tour completely. We have done several Trafalgar tours and this was by far the worst! The best was a tour of Spain/Portugal

The tour guide Emma was incredible with…

The tour guide Emma was incredible with the information she provided and the care she gave us. Our bus driver Sid was careful and thoughtful. We saw so many sites and could never have done this much on our own. All of the stops were well planned the food was delicious and all of the hotels but one were top notch. Great tour for seeing England, Scotland and Wales and the Tattoo!

Great Italian Cities

To begin with, the airplane we were to take with Delta was delayed more than 2 hours. I tried to get Trafalgar to book a replacement flight but they hestitated. I tried to get Delta to book us on a flight that would get use to Rome in time for the tour. I had to listen to the Delta Agent argue with the Trafalgar Agent as to whose reponsibility it was to get it done. After 40 minutes, I told the Delta agent to do it. She booked us on a British Air flight to London Heathrow they connect Rome. We just made it. The Hotel rooms in London and Florence were small. Bathrooms were very small (think recreational vehicle). One (1) person only. Airconditioning was minimal at best. Food at the hotel was average at best. The tour in Rome was to be mostly walking. Rome is built on hills so it was a strain uphill. The travel director would say it was a moderate walk for 10 minutes; however, she is a world record-setting, world class team athlete so 10 minutes for her was much more time and strenous for a 76 year man and woman. The pace was an issue. Our group (20 or so people) got strung out particularly in the back where I was. As we sent through a seemingly crowd of people in the train station at the Colesium, I GOT ROBBED AND AND LOST SUBSTANTIAL EUROS AND LOST MY HEARING AIRS IN THE INCIDENT. There were no police to be found. The Travel Director pressed us onward. She reported the incident to Trafalgar and told me to file a travel insurance claim. We did get to see an number of historical site. In Florence, again the hotel and bathroom was smaller than in Rome. We did get to see many historical sites, architecture, and art. The side trip to Assisi was worth the extra cost and effort. The dinner at the trattoria was very good. However, the bus that took us there was not the same one to bring us back to Florence. The return bus had no working airconditioning. The outside temperature was between 95-100°F and the bus windows did not open. Miserable trip back. The trip to Venice via Bologna was a great trip through the river valley. Venice was as advertised but, again, it was a lot of walking for us. We were miserable. Near the end of the tour on Saturday, the local tour guide ended the tour in the middle of Venice without much information as to how to get back to our hotel. She said that we were on our on accord. Venice is a maze of narrow walking streets and signs and your location are not easily discernable. We insisted on some direction, details, and instance as to getting back to our hotel. The next day, the water taxi provided to the airport was great. The struggle to get through Italian passport control was difficult and took a lot of time (1½ hours). Knowing what I know now, would I do it again? Keep in mind that Tralagar's agents repeatedly said that accomodations would be made for those that needed extra time in walking. ABSOLUTELY NOT. Nor would I recommend it for a 70+ year old couple. We saw a lot of great history and sites but it may have not been worth it. Currently, I am struggling with the AON Insurance (travel insurance company) from which I purchase their top level, most comprehensive, expensive coverage. It seems that Trafalgar's Tour Director's direction to keep going after the incident in Rome was bad advice and has compromised my ability to recover anything under the insurance policy that Trafalgar sold me. AON wants a police report. The Tour Director did not assist, in fact, prevented me from reporting. After spending more than $12,000 with Trafalagar, getting robbed (425 euros), having to replace $2,500 hearing aids, plus all of the other issues, and presumably getting no recovery from their insurance, I should atleast get an apology for some corporate manager of Trafalgar. No follow up from Trafalgar's, just sell more trips to unsuspecting travelers.
