I contacted TripAdvisor to inform them…

I contacted TripAdvisor to inform them of a misplaced review of a hotel I know quite well. I have no connection to the hotel or to the reviewer. I simply know the area well and I can read. The hotel is on a Golf Resort at Mar Menor in Spain. The reviewer of the hotel hadn’t stayed at the hotel. Their own comments said clearly they had stayed in a private villa on the neighbouring golf resort. The villas are not owned by the hotel. Yet they’d been allowed to negatively review the hotel, including the rooms etc that they hadn’t stayed in. The reviewer had a general moan that there weren’t enough restaurants to their liking nearby ( near their villa ) and they had to get taxis into the nearby town. They complained about taxis too, all on their review about a hotel that just happens to be near their rental villa. They posted their negative review about their experience under the local hotels name, even though had not stayed there. TripAdvisor allows this, even though it is not a genuine review. It can’t be, by their own admission the reviewer didn’t stay at the hotel. The hotel themselves has asked the reviewer to remove the misplaced post, I stumbled upon it and asked Tripadvisor to review the misplaced post. They have and still refuse to intervene. I find myself now asking, how can we trust reviews on Tripadvisor when they will not correct very obvious errors reported to them like this one? It’s also very unfair on the businesses who are wrongly identified and negatively reviewed by idiot reviewers. In this case, it’s akin allowing a negative review of Kabul to remain posted on a review of the beautiful city of Edinburgh. Both are cities, but everyone knows they’re not the same. Except it would appear if your Tripadvisor and whats been said doesn’t breach their policies. Who cares if it’s about an entirely different place? Not Tripadvisor. Crazy!

When 'we don't arbitrate facts' means 'we ignore evidence

We run a small accommodation business and have spent months going back and forth with Tripadvisor trying to get them to look honestly at a review that contains a demonstrably false claim, backed by documented correspondence and booking records we provided directly to their team. The reviewer cancelled his own reservation through a booking site within the no-refund window, was informed of the policy in writing, declined a goodwill voucher, then showed up as a walk-in expecting a room that had already been resold per standard policy. He then posted a review accusing us of stealing his money and claiming we published his personal information elsewhere, which is simply untrue. What makes this even harder to accept is that an earlier version of this same review, with essentially identical content, was already removed by Tripadvisor as not meeting their guidelines. When the reviewer posted it again almost unchanged, it was somehow deemed eligible and left online, with no explanation for the reversal. We asked Tripadvisor's support team directly whether they could verify the false claim against the documentation we sent. Their answer was that they do not arbitrate factual disputes, even when the facts are verifiable and one party has supplied documentary proof. We also asked them to point to the actual customer service failure that justified keeping the review live. No answer was given, just template replies and links to general guidelines. A platform that cannot or will not distinguish between a subjective opinion and a false factual claim, even when handed the evidence, is not protecting travelers. It is protecting anonymous accusations at the expense of businesses that have no real recourse.

A única coisa boa é a localização bem central.

TripAdvisor is reasonably reliable in…

TripAdvisor is reasonably reliable in the US where I live, but in Indonesia it is profoundly deficient. For most cities it fails to list the majority of restaurants. For those that it does include, the number of customer reviews is very small and often very old. GoogleMaps restaurant ratings proved much more reliable
