I booked my 2005 Volvo V70 in for a service and MOT on 19 June 2026. I was told the car had failed its MOT because of an ABS warning light and was quoted approximately £1,100 for a “first line of repair”, with no guarantee that this would actually fix the problem. I was also told that the MOT Manual had changed and that this was now a failure point, despite the car having previously passed MOTs with the same ABS warning light present. I fully understand that an ABS warning light can be an MOT issue, but I was not given a clear explanation of what had changed, whether the fault was active or historic, or why such an expensive first step was necessary. When I collected the car, a passenger airbag warning light was showing, which had not been present before the car went in. I also found an unused filter left on the passenger seat, despite it appearing that I had been charged for it. The car had also been left in a poor condition after cleaning. I subsequently took the car to another garage. They cleared the stored diagnostic errors, and the ABS and passenger airbag warnings have not reappeared since. The car then passed its MOT. This raises serious questions about whether the original diagnostic faults were properly validated before I was asked to consider a £1,100 repair. This is not the first time I have had concerns with MOT advice from this garage. On a previous occasion, I was also told that a minor issue was an MOT failure, only for that to be refuted by another garage. Overall, I found this experience very disappointing. I expected clearer technical advice, better communication and more care before being asked to approve such a significant amount of work on an older vehicle. Even worse, my second email on my complaint has received no response at all so I have escalated to Volvo UK.

Never buy a Volvo. Volvo has proven to be the single biggest car purchasing mistake I have made. Save yourself from their truly awful customer service and buy a different car.

If it had not been for the Volvo EX30 battery problem, I would be giving this car a 5 star review, as it is a delight to drive. It is now 7 months since Volve informed us in December that the batteries fitted to our car could, under some circumstances, catch fire and asking us to restrict charging to 70% until the batteries could be replaced. Since then we have neither received a date on which the batteries will be replace nor any compensation to cover the additional charging costs etc. Volve seem to be more interested in sell new cars than sorting out the problems of past customer. We will not be buying another Volve car in the future.

Whatever has Volvo not done with their supposed "improved customer experience software updates" in my 18 month old XC60 Hybrid? First update they swapped over the "time display" with the "internet connection", now I have to take my eyes of the road and swivel head to see the time, but at least it gave me a 'button' to switch on cameras. Useful. Now the update to 5.0.17 (?) it has taken away the selectable camera function! Jeez! Unfortunately you cannot revert back to a previous software level. Does anyone listen or check what they are doing. It's bad enough not having a Handbook!!!
