Low trading volume leads to lower prices

I have been using the platform for a number of years now. In the beginning it worked well. I could buy and also sell my Whisky. But as of late the liquidity on the platform has dried up and I have been trying to sell my stock at less than 50% of their valuation for months and not found a buyer. Highly iliquid.

As with any investment, there are risks that come with investing in Scotch whisky, and one of these is that the market price for the whisky you're maturing may fall as demand does not meet supply. This is what we're currently seeing reflected in the industry, and on our Live Order Board. Important to note is that the whisky market globally is cyclical and has been going through a downturn over the last 18 months. With supply exceeding demand, there are more sellers than buyers, and subsequently buyers have become more selective with the price they bid for liquid (a typical buyers’ market), which in turn has pushed down bid and offer prices. It's worth noting that Bulk Trade Bid prices this year have all been equal to or above our published valuations, even though trading prices between clients are currently lower. Valuations are not adjusted every time a trade happens on the Live Order Board, as doing so would make the marketplace far more volatile for everyone using it and cheat clients out of realising the full potential value of their investment. Instead, our valuations reflect a more stable, considered view of industry value — and the fact that industry buyers are still paying at these levels through Bulk Trade Bids gives us confidence that they remain competitive in the bulk, wholesale market. You have two options for selling: either list on the Live Order Board, which provides you with flexibility to exit when you choose (though you may not achieve our published valuation price right now), or wait for a Bulk Trade Bid, which has recently tended to track valuation prices more closely. We understand your frustration with current liquidity, and we're grateful you've been a client for a number of years. Very deceptive, valuations are often 2 or 3 times what any buyers are offering. Substantial fees accrue while one waits for an upturn in prices which may never come.

It is important to clarify that current Live Order Board prices reflect short-term market conditions where supply temporarily exceeds demand, whereas your published account valuation reflects long-term commercial worth. Do not invest through this platform

Do not invest through this platform - highly misleading and you are highly likely to lose a lot of money. ‘Valuations’ that are provided by whiskey direct in no way reflect even the midpoint of the buy or sell spread on their site - the ‘valuation’ is sourced from somewhere completely different and is often 30-60% higher than the mid point of the bid offer spread - never mind the being anywhere near the buy offers on the site. Liquidity: there is essentially very little liquidity so it near impossible to buy or sell and the spreads are massive. By way of example I invested circa 11k over the course of several years - ‘valuation’ from whiskey direct circa £16k. If I attempted to sell it all over the last 4-5 months it would net approx £5k so a £6k loss and a 10k over valuation! Do not be fooled by this company and their generic reply below - invest your money elsewhere, its a complete scam, you only need to look at the number of poor reviews on trust pilot !

If we adjusted platform valuations every time an individual seller accepted a lower bid to liquidate quickly, it would create artificial, highly volatile swings that do not reflect true commercial whisky industry values. To give context, we have seen seven successful Bulk Trade Bids this year alone priced at or above our published valuations, showing that the wider industry continues to validate these price points. Liquidity & Market Cycles The Scotch whisky market operates in cycles - typically running in 8- to 12-year patterns. After exceptionally high demand and record trading volumes in 2022 and 2023, the wider market is currently in an "ebb" phase. During these naturally quieter periods, bid-offer spreads widen, and instant liquidity slows down. However, market history consistently shows that whisky is a long-term physical asset rather than a short-term trading tool. Historical data analysing 8-year and 12-year holding periods going back to 1988 shows that there has not been a single window in which holding Scotch whisky over these time horizons resulted in a net loss. While current exit prices on the order book may reflect slower short-term demand, holding through the current market cycle historically allows value to recover as supply and demand balance out. I find whisky direct to be open and transparent on their products and fees etc. I believe they are a reliable and trustworthy business as is the BullionVault business of which I’ve been a client for 15 years.

Long Time investor massively disappointed

I have been investing on and off for years. Their "valuation" is massively over inflated and bulk trade bids come along once in a blue moon and if you miss the email then tough luck. I wanted to take my investment out, and you are stuck selling to people who massively undercut the price. My total lost exceeded 60% this is after 5+ years holding some stock. Dont expect to make any real money out of this system.
