Never refunded my money — treated like a criminal for asking
Order No. 19910000710504 (16.04.2025) I'm sharing this as a warning to other customers, not even as a refund request — at this point I have given up on ever seeing that money again. I purchased a pair of Birkenstock sandals for 489.00 RON (approximately 100 EUR), paid in cash. When I processed the return, I requested that the refund be issued to my Spanish bank account. After waiting a considerable time with no update, I contacted customer service to ask about the status of my refund. Only then was I informed that they could not refund the amount to that account because it was not a Romanian bank account. I then provided a Romanian bank account for the refund. However, Zalando subsequently asked me to prove that I had not received the money in my Spanish account — which I found unreasonable, since this is information they should be able to verify on their end. Nonetheless, I contacted my Spanish bank, which provided a signed bank statement for the relevant period confirming that no such payment had been received. This was still not accepted as sufficient; Zalando then requested a signed declaration from my bank explicitly stating that they had not received the funds. I did not want to ask that of my bank; it felt humiliating. Given that Zalando has the means to verify this transaction internally, I never understood why the entire burden of proof was placed on me. I contacted them many, many times over this. The whole process was extremely stressful, and being asked repeatedly to prove a negative — something the company could easily check on its own — felt, again, humiliating. For context: I lived in Italy and Spain, was a loyal Zalando customer for years, and spent a considerable amount on the platform before this happened in Romania. I have not made a single purchase since, and I never will again. By comparison, I once ordered boots from Amazon that didn't fit. Due to issues with the collection points, I was unable to complete the return — yet Amazon refunded me in full and told me to keep the boots. That is how a customer should be treated. This isn't an endorsement of Amazon, which has its own well-documented issues, but the contrast in how each company handled a return problem is stark. If you're considering shopping with Zalando Lounge, know that this is what can happen if something goes wrong with a refund — and how little recourse you may have once it does.
