Generally speaking a no brainer experience for hiring a car at Dublin airport from Avis (booking was made online through Aer Lingus). The staff were efficient and helpful. The facilities were good. The one issue I have with all hire car companies is the additional insurance charge that you are pressured into taking at the desk when picking up the car. It’s quite stressful to have to decide whether to take it or not (it would have added another £100 to the cost of my 3 day hire - more than the actual price quoted online for the hire. All companies do this and it makes me feel quite negative towards them. Why not offer this at point of booking online then the decision can be taken outwith the travel period and amended or changed if it was felt necessary to do so. The worst time to be asked this, from a travellers perspective, is right at the point of picking up the vehicle, when there are so many other travel issues to deal with. As I say it’s not just Avis, all companies do this. It puts me off hiring a car. Either lower the cost of this insurance or allow for it to be added at point of sale online.

Very quick to pick up the car get the documentation done and the drop off was super easy too. Great all round thanks Avis.

Kerry Airport, June 2026. Rental Agreement with AVIS. No damage during the rental. At return, no vehicle inspection took place and no closing document was issued. EUR 2,500 was charged to my MasterCard on the day of return. The subsequent invoice listed only 'Combination of Charges / Mehrere Gebühren' – no itemisation, no damage description, no legal basis. After two formal written requests, Avis Ireland acknowledged on 17 August 2026 that the charge had been a 'technical error which charged the preauthorisation instead of releasing it.' The full amount of EUR 2,500 was credited to my account on 24 August 2026 – 57 days after the original charge. The matter is fully resolved. I am satisfied with the eventual outcome. What I cannot accept is that resolving it required six weeks of written escalation, a formal chargeback filing with my credit card provider and parallel involvement of my booking intermediary CHECK24. The refund should have been automatic. I note that publicly available platforms show numerous comparable complaints about delayed deposit releases at major car rental companies. The most thoroughly documented case involves Hertz, which over four years filed over 3,000 stolen vehicle reports annually, a significant portion of which were inaccurate and led to wrongful arrests of customers. US senators demanded a Federal Trade Commission investigation, and Hertz settled approximately 364 related claims for around USD 168 million in December 2022. This is confirmed in Hertz's own SEC filings. I am not asserting that delayed refunds are deliberate industry policy. What I can say is that the gap between what is technically possible in payment processing and what customers routinely experience in this sector remains striking. Practical advice: document vehicle condition at pickup and return with timestamped photos. Check your card statement immediately after return. If an unexplained charge appears, act the same day in writing. Your most effective instruments are the chargeback procedure via your credit card provider and the European Car Rental Conciliation Service (ECRCS).

Can’t fault Avis Great car, service, value However Big issue I booked this through Ryan Air Consequently Avis and all bothered take a £2000 charge on your credit card No exceptions unless you pay again for insurance through Avis having already paid that to Ryan Air Never again Book direct with the car hire company to avoid this

Auch nicht für Geld. Unclaimed ist fair. Claimed gibt das Mikrofon — nicht den Radiergummi.
