As a world traveller aged 81 l can confidently say this is the worst airport experience l have ever had - mid-week, admittedly in August, but that would not be peak travel in Austria. Winter weekends would be busier and l would dissuade anyone from flying into Salzburg for a skiing holiday. Arriving from the UK with British Airways we had to walk across the tarmac to an arrivals hall that was crammed full of people. I travelled with my son who has a UK passport (l have an EU one) and who completed his fingerprint check immediately. He was then moved to one of the non EU queues while l had already joined the EU queue which hardly seemed to move at all as people who were clearly not EU were processed at the rate of about 3 minutes per person. My son was then directed to the end of the EU queue, but it took a whole hour to be processed. It must also be the only arrivals hall in the world without toilets which is rather badly planned. Our booked taxi had not calculated in a wait of that length and proceeded to speed up our journey to what l felt was life-threatening in order to make it in time to his next booking. Unfortunately we had no time to recover from this experience as our return journey was booked for the next day. Business class security was relatively quick and efficient, but the business class lounge was crammed full of people with nowhere to sit, so nowhere to have breakfast. Passport control for leaving entailed another long wait in a long queue which again took minutes per non-EU passenger. Mercifully the arrivals passport checks in the UK were super-efficient via electronic scanning booths and absolutely no wait at all, so we know it is possible. I see from other comments that this airport is ranked as one of the worst (certainly in the developed world), a statement that l would wholly agree with. Replies from the management to these reviews are glib and trying to excuse appalling state of affairs with busy periods. The state of Salzburg Airport is shameful and desperately needs improving. More staff. No excuse.

Really disappointing experience at Salzburg airport today at the end of an otherwise lovely holiday. Arrived at airport 2.5h before flight time. Checked in T1, told to go to T2 for Manchester flight. Queue in T2 for security for 30 mins for the flight to disappear from the board and an announcement to be made that flight will now go from T1. Head round to T1, scan boarding passes, through security etc to find no gate for Manchester. Track down member of staff after 10 mins searching who says we (and about 40 other passengers for same flight) are in the wrong terminal and proceeds to escort us to the exit, only to be left to have to start the entire process again - queue in T2 for close to an hour to get through very slow security and passport control to eventually get through 10 mins before flight was due to depart. No chance to get a drink or anything for family (including 11 yo with medical needs). Total chaos, poor communication and no apology for what was the airport’s error entirely.

Shocking experience at Salzburg Airport. Our flight was at 9:45 AM. We arrived early at 8:15 AM with our 3-year-old son. After check-in, we joined the security line at 8:45 AM and were surprised to discover there was no priority lane for families with children or strollers, something we have seen in airports all over the world. What made the situation even more shocking was seeing that priority access existed only for VIP or paid fast-track passengers, while families with exhausted children were left standing for long periods in endless queues. Treating money as more important than the wellbeing of small children says a lot about the priorities of this airport. Security management was extremely poor: only two screening lines were open while other staff members were standing around doing nothing. At 9:15 AM we were still stuck halfway through the queue, with many passengers worried about missing their flights. Only after passengers started complaining were additional lines finally opened. Meanwhile, we were physically exhausted, trying to manage a tired and crying 3-year-old child. The worst part came during security screening: we were told very aggressively that because our son had just turned 3 years old, we were not allowed to carry water for him. They threw away bottles we had paid a ridiculous amount of money for, while water inside the airport is sold at extremely inflated prices. In 2026, many airports around the world already use modern technologies capable of checking liquids safely without forcing families to throw everything away. That is why this policy felt not only outdated, but also like a system designed to force passengers to buy overpriced water once inside the airport. Even worse, they were also about to confiscate our son’s medical cream for dermatitis. After hours of stress and an incredibly inhumane handling of the situation, I lost my temper and reacted badly, which I fully acknowledge. However, the treatment received by a family traveling with a small child was unacceptable and completely lacking empathy. The situation escalated to the point where airport police reported me to the pilots as an “aggressive individual” before boarding, despite the fact that I never threatened anyone. Thankfully, the airline crew behaved in a much more humane and professional way, even giving our son a bottle of water. After this experience, we will never return to this airport. Cold, chaotic management with absolutely no consideration for families traveling with children.
